What a WhatsApp AI agent costs in Kenya depends on the route you take. On 12 September 2026, published prices ran from KES 1,500 a month for do-it-yourself tools to KES 300,000 one-off for agency builds, with done-for-you monthly services in between. Meta’s own message fees come on top, and they change on 1 October 2026.
What are the ways to get a WhatsApp AI agent?
There are three main routes, and they differ less in the software than in who does the work.
- Do it yourself. You sign up to a tool, connect your number, upload your prices and write the answers. The monthly fee is lowest, and the time cost is yours.
- Done for you. A provider learns your business, builds and trains the agent, connects it and keeps it accurate for a monthly fee. You watch the chats and step in when you want.
- Custom agency build. A developer builds a bot to your specification for a one-off fee, often with a maintenance charge after launch. Changes are usually quoted as extra work.
There is also a fourth option that did not exist a few months ago. Meta announced its own Business Agent on 3 June 2026 and says getting started is free, with paid subscription offerings to come. We compare it fairly in Meta’s free business AI vs a done-for-you sales agent.
What do providers publish as their prices?
The table below shows prices as published on each provider’s own website on 12 September 2026. It is not a recommendation and not a full list of the market. Prices change, so check the provider’s page before you decide.
| Provider | Route | Published price | Also stated on the page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timi | Do it yourself | Starter KES 1,500 a month (500 buyer chats), Growth KES 4,900 (2,000 chats), Pro KES 12,000 (unlimited) | English, Swahili and Sheng. Shares your Till or Paybill but does not collect payments directly |
| Woovli | Do it yourself | Standard KES 2,500 a month (1 number), Multi KES 4,999 (up to 3), Multi+ KES 9,999 (up to 6) | 7-day free trial. Says it uses the official API and offers M-Pesa STK push inside WhatsApp |
| Black Shepherd Technologies | Custom build | One-off builds from KES 20,000 (basic bot) to KES 200,000 (enterprise AI suite), with a GPT-powered bot at KES 90,000 | Maintenance KES 8,000 a month |
| bitcrowd (cost article, May 2026) | Custom build | FAQ bot KES 50,000 to 100,000, order bot KES 120,000 to 300,000, custom assistant on quote | A worked example with hosting at KES 1,500 a month. Meta fees on top |
| WeAutomate | Done for you | Setup free. Starter KES 10,000 a month, Business KES 15,000 a month, Enterprise custom | Built, trained, hosted and tuned by the team. Meta fees billed by Meta where they apply |
Two things a price table cannot show: what is included, and what happens after launch. A KES 1,500 tool and a KES 15,000 service are not the same product. One gives you software to run. The other gives you a team that runs it.
How does Meta charge for WhatsApp messages?
Any agent connected through the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta’s API, sits under Meta’s pricing. Here is how it works, according to Meta’s pricing documentation as read on 12 September 2026.
- Per message, not per conversation. Since 1 July 2025, Meta charges per message. The older conversation-based pricing is now marked as deprecated.
- Four categories. Marketing, utility, authentication and service. Meta charges when a message is delivered, and the rate depends on the category and the recipient’s market.
- Kenya’s region. Meta places Kenya in its “Rest of Africa” pricing region.
- Current rate card. The rates in force took effect on 1 July 2026. Utility and authentication messages have monthly volume tiers that lower the rate.
- Free until 30 September 2026. Service replies inside the 24-hour customer service window have been free since 1 November 2024. Utility templates delivered inside an open window have been free since 1 July 2025. When a customer arrives through a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page button, Meta’s page says all messages are free for 72 hours.
We do not quote Meta’s per-message rates here, because the rate depends on the message type and on Kenya’s region, and Meta updates its rate card. Check the current figures on Meta’s pricing page.
What changes on 1 October 2026?
According to Meta’s developer documentation on non-template messages, from 1 October 2026 Meta will charge per message for service messages, and for utility messages sent inside an open 24-hour window. Meta says service messages will be charged at the same rates as its utility and authentication messages in each market, and that it would publish the new rates by 1 September 2026.
If you check Meta’s public marketing page for Platform pricing, you may still read that service messages are free. When we looked on 12 September 2026 it had not been updated. The developer documentation is where Meta sets out the change.
This matters more for an AI agent than for almost anything else. Nearly every message an agent sends is a service reply to a customer who wrote first. Until 30 September those replies are free. From 1 October they are billed. We explain what to do about it in WhatsApp to charge for service replies from 1 October 2026.
What is the real cost of owning an agent?
The monthly fee is one line on a longer bill. Before you compare prices, put a number, even a rough one, against each of these.
How much of your time will it take?
With a do-it-yourself tool, someone has to write the answers, upload the price list, test the replies and read the chats to catch mistakes. That someone is usually the owner. Your evenings have a value, even if nobody invoices you for them.
Who keeps it accurate?
An agent is only as good as what it was last taught. When a price moves, a service is added or the opening hours change for December, somebody has to update it. With a tool, that is you. With an agency build, it is often a change request or a maintenance fee. With a done-for-you service, it should be part of the monthly fee, so ask.
What happens when your prices change?
Here is an illustrative example, not a real case. A salon raises its braiding prices in December but forgets to update its bot. For the next two weeks the bot quotes the old price to every customer who asks. The owner either honours the old price or has an awkward conversation with each customer. Either way, the cheap bot has cost money.
How will Meta’s fees grow with your volume?
Meta’s fees scale with the number of messages delivered. A business with a few chats a day will barely notice them. A busy business replying to hundreds of customers a day should estimate them before 1 October 2026.
What does the alternative cost?
The usual comparison is a person. According to WageIndicator’s 2026 salary data, most general receptionists in Kenya earn KES 33,125 to 123,608 a month. That is not a like-for-like comparison. A receptionist greets walk-ins, answers the phone and uses judgement that no agent has. An agent answers WhatsApp at 11pm on a Sunday, which few receptionists do.
Which route suits which business?
| If this sounds like you | The route that usually fits |
|---|---|
| Low volume, simple questions, and you enjoy setting things up | A do-it-yourself tool, or Meta’s own agent if it is available on your account |
| Busy, enquiries arrive while your hands are full, and you want it done properly without learning software | A done-for-you service |
| An unusual sales process, your own systems to connect, and a budget for development | A custom agency build |
When is WeAutomate not the right choice?
We would rather you bought the right thing than bought from us.
- Your enquiries arrive by phone. The agent works in chat. It does not make or answer phone calls.
- You need payment collected and confirmed inside the chat. WeAutomate has no native M-Pesa integration. It shares your Paybill or Till and hands payment confirmation to a person. Some do-it-yourself tools say they offer M-Pesa STK push, so compare them.
- Your budget is very tight and you have time. A do-it-yourself tool from KES 1,500 a month, or Meta’s free-to-start agent, may be enough.
- You want to own custom code. An agency build gives you that, at a higher up-front cost.
Where WeAutomate fits
WeAutomate is the done-for-you route. A team in Kenya learns your business, builds and trains the agent, connects your WhatsApp and Google Calendar, tests it, then hosts, monitors and tunes it every month. Setup is free on Starter and Business. Starter is KES 10,000 a month and Business is KES 15,000 a month, with no long contract. Most businesses go live in days, and simple setups go live the same day. Meta’s message fees are billed by Meta where they apply. See the full breakdown on the pricing page and everything the agent does on the features page.

Questions
Is there a free WhatsApp AI agent for a Kenyan business?
Meta announced its own Business Agent on 3 June 2026 and says getting started is free, with paid subscription offerings to follow. Meta says it is available to eligible businesses in select markets, so check under Tools in your WhatsApp Business app to see whether it is live for your account.
Do I pay Meta on top of the agent's monthly fee?
Often, yes. An agent running on the WhatsApp Business Platform is subject to Meta's per-message fees, and from 1 October 2026 those include service replies inside the 24-hour window. Meta bills its fees separately from whatever you pay the agent provider.
Is a one-off agency build cheaper than a monthly service?
Sometimes, over the first year. One-off build prices published by Kenyan developers ran from KES 20,000 to KES 300,000 when we checked on 12 September 2026, and some add a monthly maintenance fee. Add the cost of paying for changes every time your prices or services move.
What does WeAutomate charge?
Setup is free on Starter and Business. Starter is KES 10,000 a month and Business is KES 15,000 a month, month to month with no long contract. Enterprise is priced to your volume and runs on your own AI key. Meta's WhatsApp message fees are billed by Meta where they apply.
