Meta's free business AI on WhatsApp vs a done-for-you sales agent

Meta Business Agent vs a done-for-you WhatsApp sales agent: what Meta's free business AI offers, who can use it, and when a managed agent is worth it.

By WeAutomate · Published 13 September 2026 · 6 min read

Meta Business Agent, announced on 3 June 2026, is Meta’s own AI for business chats on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, and Meta says getting started is free. A done-for-you agent costs a monthly fee, but someone else sets it up, trains it and keeps it accurate. Meta’s tool can suit simple needs. A managed agent suits busy owners.

What is Meta Business Agent?

Meta announced it on 3 June 2026. According to Meta’s newsroom post, it can answer questions specific to your business, recommend products from a business catalogue, book appointments, qualify incoming leads and help close sales. Meta says the owner decides when a team member steps in, and that it works across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.

A few more facts from Meta’s own pages:

  • Scale. In its June 2026 launch post on the WhatsApp Business blog, Meta said more than 1 million businesses were already using Business Agents on WhatsApp and Messenger.
  • Language. Meta says it replies in the customer’s local language using your tone. Meta does not list which languages.
  • Where it lives. In the WhatsApp Business app, you switch it on under Tools, then Meta Business Agent.
  • Price. Meta says getting started is free, and that paid subscription offerings will follow in the coming months.

Business Daily covered the launch for Kenyan readers on 4 June 2026, describing it as a tool for small firms to answer questions, recommend products and book appointments.

Is Meta Business Agent available in Kenya?

Meta’s product page says it is available to eligible businesses in select markets, with more markets launching soon. None of the Meta pages we checked on 12 September 2026 named Kenya.

The practical answer: open your WhatsApp Business app and look under Tools. If Meta Business Agent is there, you can try it. If it is not, it may not be live for your account yet.

How does it compare with a done-for-you agent?

This table sticks to what each side states. Where Meta has not published something, we say so rather than guess.

When is Meta’s free agent enough?

Honestly, often. Try it first if most of these are true:

  • It shows up under Tools in your WhatsApp Business app.
  • Your questions are simple: prices, opening hours, location, what is in stock.
  • Your volume is modest, and you have time to set it up and check its answers.
  • You are comfortable being the one who updates it when something changes.
  • Budget matters more than having someone else responsible for it.

If it works for your business, keep it. You can always change later.

When is a trained, managed agent worth paying for?

A monthly fee makes sense when your time is the scarce thing, not the software. That tends to be when:

  • You do not have hours to spare. A salon owner with a full chair or a clinic manager covering the front desk will not sit down to configure an AI.
  • Mistakes are expensive. A wrong price or a wrong booking costs real money, so you want someone checking the agent’s work every month.
  • Your prices and services change often. Each change needs updating. With a managed agent, that is the provider’s job.
  • You want Swahili and Sheng tested on your real customers. Meta says local language but does not list languages. A managed provider should show you in a demo, and we list what to test in can a WhatsApp AI agent reply in Swahili and Sheng?
  • You want follow-ups for leads that go quiet. WeAutomate follows up to three rounds, stopping the moment the customer replies.
  • You want one place to watch every chat, with alerts when a lead looks valuable.

What about clinics and other excluded businesses?

Meta’s developer documentation for the API version, the Meta Business Agent Platform, lists verticals it excludes (we explain the app and the API in WhatsApp Business app or the API): Finance, Government, Health, Alcohol, Gambling, over-the-counter drugs and matrimony. That means a clinic or dental practice using the API version is not eligible under those terms.

We have not seen Meta state the same rule for the app version, so if you run a health business, check your eligibility directly with Meta before you rely on it. WeAutomate works with clinics and dental practices, and hands anything clinical straight to your staff.

What should you ask before choosing either?

  1. Is it available for my account today? For Meta, check Tools. For a provider, ask how soon you can go live.
  2. Who updates it when my prices change? You, or someone you pay.
  3. How does booking reach the calendar I already use? Test it end to end.
  4. Does it handle my customers’ languages? Send real messages in Swahili, Sheng and mixed English.
  5. What will it cost after the free period? Meta has said subscriptions are coming. Ask any provider for the full monthly cost, including Meta’s message fees where they apply.
  6. What happens when it does not know the answer? It should hand over, not guess.

Where WeAutomate fits

WeAutomate is for owners who would rather not be the person training and fixing an AI. The team learns your business, builds and trains the agent, connects WhatsApp and Google Calendar, tests it, and then tunes it every month. Setup is free. Starter is KES 10,000 a month and Business is KES 15,000 a month, with no long contract. If Meta’s free agent does the job for you, use it. If you want it done properly without doing it yourself, compare the two in a demo. For the full cost picture, read what a WhatsApp AI agent costs in Kenya in 2026.

Questions

How do I add Meta AI to my WhatsApp Business app?

Meta says its Business Agent is switched on in the WhatsApp Business app under Tools, then Meta Business Agent. Meta also says it is available to eligible businesses in select markets, with more markets launching soon, so it may not appear on every account yet.

Why is Meta Business Agent not showing in my WhatsApp Business app?

Meta describes the rollout as limited to eligible businesses in select markets for now. If you do not see it under Tools, it may not be live for your account or country yet. Update the app and check again later.

Will Meta Business Agent stay free?

Meta says getting started is free, and that in the coming months businesses will access the agent through paid subscription offerings. Meta has not published those prices on the pages we checked on 12 September 2026.

Can I use Meta Business Agent and a managed agent together?

Treat them as alternatives on the same number rather than a pair. Two agents answering one customer would confuse them. Pick one, test it properly, and change later if it is not working.
