Can a WhatsApp AI agent reply in Swahili and Sheng? How language matching works, illustrative chats, what to test in a demo and when a person steps in.

Yes. A well-trained WhatsApp AI agent can reply in Swahili and Sheng, and switch when the customer switches. The agent WeAutomate sets up replies in the language the customer writes in, whether English, Swahili or Sheng, and you can limit it to the languages you prefer. The honest test is your own customers’ messages, so try them in a demo.
How does language matching work in practice?
The agent reads the customer’s message and replies in the same language. If a customer opens in Swahili, the reply is in Swahili. If they switch to English halfway through, the agent switches too.
Your training material does not need to be in every language. The agent learns your prices, services and FAQs, then answers in whatever language the customer uses. The price is the same in any language. Only the words around it change.
You also decide the limits. Some businesses want English and Swahili only. Others are happy for the agent to match a customer’s Sheng. Tell the team during setup.
What does a Swahili conversation look like?
The examples in this post are illustrative. The businesses, prices and times are made up to show how the agent handles language.
A salon, with a customer writing in Swahili:
Customer: Habari, mnafanya knotless braids? Bei ni ngapi?
Agent: Nzuri! Ndiyo, tunafanya knotless braids. Bei ni KES 3,000 kwa short, KES 4,000 medium na KES 5,000 long. Ungependa kuja siku gani?
Customer: Jumamosi mchana
Agent: Jumamosi tuna nafasi saa nane mchana au saa kumi jioni. Nikuwekee ipi?
Customer: Saa nane
Agent: Sawa, umewekwa Jumamosi saa nane mchana, yaani 2:00 PM. Nitakukumbusha Ijumaa jioni.
Notice the time. In Swahili, “saa nane mchana” is 2:00 PM, because Swahili time counts from about 6 in the morning. An agent that books into Google Calendar has to get that conversion right, every time. Test it.
What does a Sheng conversation look like?
A clothing shop, with a customer writing in Sheng:
Customer: Niaje, hii hoodie iko size M? Ni pesa ngapi?
Agent: Poa! Iko size M kwa black na grey. Ni KES 2,200. Unataka ikuje wapi?
Customer: Niko Kasarani. Delivery ni ngapi?
Agent: Kasarani ni KES 250, inafika kesho. Total ni KES 2,450. Nikutumie Till number?
Customer: Sawa, tuma
Agent: Hii hapa Till number yetu. Ukimaliza kulipa, nitumie message na team yetu ita-confirm order yako.
The agent matches the relaxed tone without overdoing slang. It also shows a real limit: it shares the Till and hands payment confirmation to a person, because WeAutomate has no native M-Pesa integration.
What about customers who mix English and Swahili?
Most real chats in Kenya are mixed. A clinic example:
Customer: Hi, nataka ku-book cleaning kesho. Mko open saa ngapi?
Agent: Hello! Kesho tuko open 8:00 AM hadi 5:00 PM. Tuna nafasi 10:00 AM au 2:30 PM. Ipi inakufaa?
Customer: 10 iko sawa. Pia jino linauma sana, ni infection?
Agent: Pole sana. Siwezi kukupa ushauri wa kitabibu hapa, lakini nimemjulisha daktari na mtu wa timu atakujibu. Nimekuwekea kesho 10:00 AM.
The booking is handled. The clinical question goes to a person. That split is the right one for any health business.
Can it understand a voice note in Swahili?
WeAutomate’s agent listens to voice notes, reads photos and screenshots, and understands PDFs a customer sends. It replies in writing, and it does not make or answer phone calls.
Voice is harder than text. Accents, background noise and fast speech all matter. If many of your customers send voice notes, include some in your demo.
What should you check in a demo?
Do not judge an agent’s Swahili or Sheng on a sales page, including this one. Test it.
- Send your real questions. Copy ten recent customer messages from your WhatsApp, in the languages they came in.
- Check the numbers. Prices, dates and times must be exactly right in every language.
- Test Swahili time. Ask for “saa tatu asubuhi” and check it books 9:00 AM.
- Switch languages mid-chat. Start in Sheng, move to English, then Swahili.
- Check the tone. Would you be happy if a new staff member wrote this to an older customer? To a young one?
- Try spelling variants. Customers type “bei gani”, “ni how much” and “pesa ngapi” for the same thing.
- Send a voice note in the way your customers speak.
- Ask for a person. Check that the agent hands over and that you get the alert.
When should a person step in?
Language is where an agent is most likely to miss a nuance. Hand over, or set the agent to hand over, when:
- A customer is upset or complaining. Tone matters more than speed.
- The meaning is unclear. Better a person asks than the agent guesses.
- Health, legal or money questions need judgement. The agent books and collects details. People advise.
- A customer is negotiating beyond the discounts you have allowed.
- Payment has been made. Your team confirms M-Pesa payments.
- The customer asks for a person. Always.
With WeAutomate, you can take over any chat from your dashboard. The agent steps back for that customer until you hand the chat back.
What are the honest limits?
- Sheng moves fast and varies between neighbourhoods and age groups. Expect the agent to understand common Sheng well and to be less sure of new or very local slang.
- There is no independent benchmark we can point you to for Swahili or Sheng quality in WhatsApp agents. That is why testing with your own messages matters.
- Other providers make language claims too. Meta says its Business Agent replies in the customer’s local language using your tone, but does not list the languages. Test any tool the same way. We compare the two in Meta’s free business AI vs a done-for-you sales agent.
- Other Kenyan languages. WeAutomate states English, Swahili and Sheng. If a large share of your customers write in another language, WeAutomate may not be the right choice until you have tested it on their real messages.
Where WeAutomate fits
WeAutomate’s agent replies in English, Swahili and Sheng on every plan, matching the language the customer writes in, and you can limit it to the languages you prefer. The team trains it on your business, tests it on your real questions before it goes live, and tunes it every month. Setup is free. Starter is KES 10,000 a month and Business is KES 15,000 a month. See it answer in the salons and spas and shops examples, or on the features page.

Questions
Do I have to train the agent separately in Swahili?
No. WeAutomate's agent is trained on your prices, services and FAQs, and replies in the language the customer writes in. What you should do is test it with real Swahili and Sheng questions from your own customers during the demo, and flag any reply that sounds wrong.
Can I stop the agent replying in Sheng?
Yes. You can limit the agent to the languages you prefer. A law firm or a school may want English and Swahili only, while a fashion shop may be happy for it to match a customer's Sheng.
What if a customer writes in another Kenyan language?
WeAutomate states English, Swahili and Sheng. If many of your customers write in another language, test it on the demo call with real messages, and plan for a person to handle those chats if the replies are not good enough.
Does the agent understand Swahili voice notes?
WeAutomate's agent listens to voice notes and replies in writing. Test it with voice notes in the accents and mix of languages your customers actually use, because voice is harder than text.
